Hair Removal Q & A

How do lasers safely remove hair?

If you’re like many patients, you may wonder how a laser can remove hair without damaging your skin. The key is the laser’s wavelength. Certain wavelengths are only absorbed by the colored pigments in the hair follicle.

As a result, the laser passes safely through your skin and travels down into the hair follicle, where its heat destroys the follicle. After the follicle is treated, the existing hair falls out and the follicle stops growing new hairs.

Laser hair removal is safe enough to be used on most parts of your body, including your:

  • Face
  • Back
  • Legs
  • Arms and armpits
  • Chest
  • Bikini line

Why do you need more than one laser treatment for hair removal?

Each hair follicle goes through a growth cycle that follows specific phases. The follicle grows hair for 2-7 years, then enters a brief transitional period before going into a resting phase. At any one time, about 10-15% of all your hair follicles are at rest.

During the resting phase, hairs in the follicle loosen and fall out, which is why you normally shed around 50-150 hairs every day. Then after three months at rest, the cycle starts again as the follicle goes back into a growth phase and regrows new hair.

The follicle’s natural growth cycle is the reason you need several laser treatments to permanently remove your hair.

Lasers can only destroy the follicle when it’s in a growth phase. Since each follicle operates on its own timing, and some follicles are at rest while others are growing, you’ll need several treatments to catch all of them in a growth phase.

Most patients need six laser hair removal sessions spaced about six weeks apart before they’re finally free of hair in the targeted areas.

What should you expect during and after laser hair removal?

During your first consultation, Dr. Ucheagwu reviews your medical history and any medications you take to be sure laser treatment is safe for you, then talks with you about the number of treatments you’ll need.

Although the laser is equipped with a cooling system to minimize discomfort, Dr. Ucheagwu explains what to expect during treatment before your session begins. Afterwards, your skin may be a little red, and some patients experience temporary crusting and pigment changes, but you won’t need to take any downtime.
