Skin Revitalization Q & A

What causes spider veins?

Spider veins develop in tiny veins called capillaries that are close to the skin’s surface. They occur when one-way valves in the blood vessels become weak or damaged.

The valves keep blood flowing in one direction, so when they fail, blood flows backward and builds up in the vein. As a result, the vein enlarges and becomes visible, forming the characteristic spiderweb-shaped discolorations.

What causes pigmented lesions?

Pigmented lesions are the result of too much melanin, a pigment that’s naturally found in your skin. Exposure to sun and age-related changes trigger a buildup of excessive melanin that darkens to create a permanently discolored spot. That’s why they’re commonly known as sun spots and age spots.

You can also develop pigmented lesions following inflammation. One of the most common causes is acne that becomes infected. After the blemish heals, it may leave a dark discoloration.

How does the Icon laser treat vascular and pigmented lesions?

The Icon laser operates at a controlled wavelength that’s absorbed by pigments in your skin but not the surrounding tissues.

As the laser’s energy is absorbed by melanin in brown spots and age spots, the discolored cells are carefully heated to the precise temperature that makes them break down.

When Dr. Ucheagwu targets spider veins, the laser is absorbed by red pigments in the vein, which means it treats the veins without harming your skin. During treatment, the pigments are heated until the blood vessel closes and breaks down.

The same treatment can also be used to target spider veins and small-to-moderate varicose veins in your legs.

Whether your laser treatment targeted skin lesions or spider veins, your body gradually clears away the cellular waste, permanently removing the discolorations.

What should you expect during and after treatment?

Skin revitalization sessions usually take 30-45 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated. Most patients find the procedure easy to tolerate because the Icon has a built-in cooling system that keeps your skin comfortable.

When discolored pigments are treated, they often appear darker before a crust forms and then flakes off. Dr. Ucheagwu provides aftercare instructions, but otherwise, you’re free to get back to your daily activities as soon as your treatment is finished.
